Epidote is a mineral that belongs to the silicate group. It has a greenish color and a vitreous luster. It forms in metamorphic rocks, such as schist and gneiss, and sometimes in igneous rocks, such as granite and diorite. Epidote is often associated with other minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, calcite, and garnet. Epidote has a monoclinic crystal system and a prismatic habit. It can also occur as fibrous or massive aggregates. Epidote has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of 3.3 to 3.6. It has a variable chemical composition, but the general formula is (Ca2)(Al,Fe)3(SiO4)3(OH).
